Character Glass Cup: a Sell-Out Retail Case
Store-by-store availability and display-piece buying behaviour
Click to enlargeA retail observation from Hong Kong stores during a character collaboration. The glass cup sold out almost immediately while other pieces remained available branch by branch, and buyers were reportedly able to purchase display pieces where shelf stock had gone.
Hero SKU effect
One glass cup absorbed almost all of the demand, clearing out within the first days while mugs and travel cups stayed on shelf. This is a common pattern in licensed ranges where a single photogenic shape becomes the item people ask for by name.
Allocation
Availability differed branch by branch rather than being uniform across the city, which suggests uneven allocation of a limited run. For distributors, this is a reminder that allocation planning affects sell-through as much as the design does.
Display pieces
Where shelf stock had gone, staff reportedly sold the display units. In practice this means the last unit moves at full price, and the display itself becomes inventory rather than a fixed fixture.
Planning takeaway
Build the range around one clear hero SKU, support it with lower-cost companions, and plan which branches receive the hero first.
- Single hero SKU cleared first
- Uneven branch allocation
- Display units sold as stock
- Hero plus companion SKU mix
